The Silver Shepherdess

Felted fleece rugs, hand crafted in the Wiltshire countryside.

Sumptuous, cosy fleeces generously donated year after year by my beautiful flock of Icelandic sheep. Hidden amongst them, an array of other breeds, my original Shetland ewes, ‘Shetlandic’ lambs, and the pet lamb gang.

The fleeces I make can be used as rugs or thrown onto sofas and armchairs. Their colours are warm browns, whites and greys. Every single one I make I want to keep but there are only so many I can fit on the floor, our sofas, chairs and bed!

I bought 6 Shetland ewe lambs in September 2018 not really having a plan but they were easy to care for and a good starter flock. They are the greatest mothers, lamb easily and are gentle little souls. They have produced lovely lambs but I wanted to do more with wool. I didn’t want to spin and knit, I wanted something on a larger scale…

Along came the Icelandics. A game changer for me as I found I could make wonderful rugs from their fleeces. 100% wool and shorn every year so there is no skin and no need to cull them to take their fleece. After crossing my Shetland ewes with an Icelandic ram I now have a small crop of Shetlandics which will produce more fleeces year on year.
